by Damaris Waigwa last modified Apr 22, 2013

Within the framework of MedPartnership sister project "Integration of climate variability and change into national strategies for Integrated Coastal Zone Management", the first "Climagine" workshop was organised in Šibenik, Croatia on 8 April 2013. The workshop was jointly organised by the Plan Bleu, PAP/RAC and the County, and was opened by Mr. Goran Pauk, President of the Šibenik-Knin County. Fifty participants, including representatives of national, regional and local authorities and institutions, academic community and NGOs attended the workshop.

The objective was to present to local stakeholders the hitherto development of the "Climagine" method, developed and implemented bClimagine in Croatiay the Plan Bleu, and to launch it, as a pilot process, in the county of Šibenik-Knin. The ultimate goal is to establish an integrated coastal zone management plan for the coastal municipalities of the county, with special focus on climate variability and change.

After an introductory part on climate variability and change, and the “Climagine” methodology, the participants discussed in working groups, various issues related to coastal management in view of climate change, and identified those of highest priority for their country.

Participants described the workshop  as “very interesting and useful”, and committed to attend additional  workshops within this project.

Briefing about "Climagine” method

The “Climagine” approach was especially developed, in the frame of the project "Integration of climate variability and change into national strategies for Integrated Coastal Zone Management" in order to address sustainable coastal zone management needs in the Mediterranean, with special focus on climate variability and change.

This approach facilitates the shaping of a sustainable development vision and area project by engaging stakeholders within a 3-step participatory process intended to describe, assess and examine the past, present and future levels of sustainability of a local socio-economic system, setting goals and monitoring the system’s progress towards sustainable development.
