The main conference event took place in Trebinje (Bosnia & Herzegovina) with a mid-conference field seminar in Dubrovnik (Croatia) and a post-conference excursion in Boka Kotorska Bay (Montenegro).

The conference was organized in the framework of the DIKTAS project in partnership with the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), in collaboration with the Hydropower System Trebisnjica (HET), Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina and the University of Belgrade, Serbia and with support of UNESCO, the IGRAC Centre and GWP-Med.

Kotor is a coastal town and municipality in Montenegro. The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period.

It is located on the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic coast. Some have called Kotor the southern-most fjord in Europe, but the geomorphology of the area can actually be attributed to a "ria", a submerged river canyon. Together with the nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovcen, Kotor and its surrounding area form an impressive and picturesque Mediterranean landscape.

The old town is entered through three gates. Within its walls there are many cultural and historical monuments, such as the Cathedral of St. Trupun, the Maritime Museum, the Church of St. Luke and Nicholas and many palaces in the Baroque style.
